SCDPS REPORTS THREE KILLED DURING THE LABOR DAY TRAVEL PERIOD

COLUMBIA – The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of three persons killed on South Carolina roadways during the Labor Day weekend, which started Friday, September 1, at 6 p.m. and concluded Monday, September 4, at midnight. Preliminary details on these crashes are below.


There were 11 fatalities during the 2016 Labor Day Period.

 

Additionally, SCDPS is reporting a preliminary number of 224 traffic deaths during the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, compared to 302 during the same time frame in 2016. This period runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

As of September 4, 2017, 642 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 684 highway deaths during the same time period in 2016.


Of the 446 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2017, 215 were not wearing seat belts. 


Through midnight September 4, 87 pedestrians have died compared to 97 in 2016; 76 motorcyclists have died compared to 103 in 2016; and 13 bicyclists have died compared to 17 in 2016 on state roads and highways.
